Another Day, Another RTX 5090 Disaster: Capacitor Burns Reported

The RTX 5090 graphics card continues to be plagued by problems since its launch. Gamers have been encountering issues ranging from blue screens of death and black screens to melting power connectors. More recently, users are reporting a new type of failure: capacitor burnouts, which have also reportedly damaged motherboards in some instances.

Recently, a Reddit user, Impossible-Weight485, reported that their ASUS ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5090 "caught fire." Photos show that the damage wasn't to the power connector, but rather to a capacitor in its vicinity, which exhibits clear signs of burning.

According to the user, the incident occurred while playing a PC game, when their computer suddenly shut down. Upon attempting to restart, the graphics card "ignited," with smoke emanating from the system. "When I removed the graphics card," the user stated, "I noticed burn marks on both the card and the motherboard."

Another image provided by the user shows burn damage on their ASUS ROG Crosshair X870E Hero motherboard, located just above and between the 'H' and 'E' of the HERO logo.

To date, reported issues with the RTX 5090 now include: melting 12-pin power connectors, black screens, missing ROP raster units, capacitor failures, and overall poor reliability.

Currently, there has been no official response regarding this latest incident. NVIDIA has previously acknowledged that they are investigating blue screen and black screen problems with the RTX 50 series, but have not yet provided a timeline for a fix.
